The Pet Train is ready to ride to a new destination

...but who are we riding for?

Our Beneficiary for the 2021 Pet Train is Doorways, a community-based nonprofit providing services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as youth and families experiencing homelessness. When we at The Pet Train heard about the Safe Kennel at Doorways we felt an immediate connection. Doorways is a worthy beneficiary of The Pet Train since we can help both pets and their families.

Megan's story.

Megan is a survivor of domestic violence and abuse. She was a client of Doorways. A true story.

Who is Doorways?

Doorways is a community-based nonprofit 501 (c) 3 providing services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, homelessness and poverty. Doorways' clients are mostly women, youth and families, including family pets. Doorways creates pathways for their clients out of homelessness, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

What does Doorways do?

Doorways has not only a hotline but they accompany victims of sexual assault to the hospital, offer court advice and trauma counseling but more than that, Doorways helps building a plan for restoring long-term stability that also includes pathways for children and youth.

Doorways provides emergency shelter for individuals and families escaping abuse – including a space that allows survivors to bring their pets. To that end there is a Domestic Violence Safehouse, Safe Apartments, and Safe Kennel. The latter is for the family pets.

Doorways also does advocacy and outreach seeking to address the cycles of abuse, homelessness, and poverty meeting their clients where they are and offering them the support that enables long-term stability (for example helping them relocate with their family pets).

Doorways’ first priority is to provide their most vulnerable neighbors with an
immediate and long-term path to safety. And that includes pets!

Doorways is committed to creating an environment that provides safe, culturally competent and inclusive services that are non-stigmatizing to their clients of all sexual orientations, including, but not limited to, those who are heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, pansexual, and questioning, as well as gender-conforming, gender non-conforming, nonbinary, transgender, and transitioning individuals.

How The Pet Train can help Doorways' mission?

Raise awareness.

There is domestic violence happening in our own back yard so let's not put our blinders on. Take a stand and if you see something that is not right, say something. Or seek a person with authority who can help.

It takes a village to bring awareness and change. Many hands in volunteering but also many skills, knowledge, finances, and resources could all help towards a positive change and safety. Do you want to volunteer?

Every dollar counts. Donate to The Pet Train which will this year benefit Doorways. The Pet Train is raising funds to proactively help help families and their pets in need.

The Pet Train is committed to help spread the word about what Doorways brings to our community, how Doorways considers pets as an important part of a family and will not leave them behind.
